Clamshell packaging seems to be steadily trending within the packaging world, whether for it's wide range of uses or tamper proofing. Customer's concerns about the difficulty to open Clamshells are far outweighed by the advantages to manufacturers and retailers.
This kind of packaging is made by thermoforming plastic resins, and comes in many standard sizes, however it is easy to create a specially made shape to client specifications, they are even made in "easy-opening" formats now, to alleviate customer worries about packaging frustration.
The advantages for retailers are the storage capabilities of clamshells, they can be made stackable, or with a hang tab for storing on a peg or rack in retail displays. They are also capable of storing fresh food extremely well, and are used frequently in supermarket bakeries for this reason.
Their difficulty to open can actually represent an advantage for businesses; it may frustrate customers, but it prevents stealing and tampering. This means clamshells are an excellent way of storing expensive electronics such as MP3s and headphones, especially as security tags can be placed inside the packaging where it cannot be removed. Also, when well secured this type of packaging can protect against extremes of temperature and rough handling due to the packaging being very sturdy.
So are clamshells the best option? Is customer's packaging frustration worth the advantages for the retailer?
